How to Tape: Shoulder

This taping technique is used to support the shoulder. It will limit your ability to reach back over your head, reducing the risk of pain or dislocation. This can help during return to sport following a shoulder injury.
This taping technique should only be used after consultation with your Physiotherapist and will not help all shoulder injuries. In the video, it is applied over clothing, but when using it you should apply it directly onto the skin.

Taping Principles:
  • Remove any hair, preferably the day before
  • Clean skin thoroughly, using an alcohol wipe (or similar) to allow firm adhesion of the tape
  • Avoid creases or folds in the tape. These can create pressure points or blisters.
  • Avoid applying taping over edges of bones or promiment tendons. This may cause tape to cut in.

Skin Irritation can be caused by:

  • Tape being too tight
  • Rough removal of tape
  • Leaving tape on the skin for too long
  • Allergic Reaction to the adhesive in the tape

Avoid Skin Irritation by:

  • Good skin preparation and taping techniques
  • Use skin preparation sprays
  • Trial different brands of tape
  • Use hypoallergenic underwrap to avoid allergic reactions
Position yourself:
  • Avoid awkard positions. Look after your back.
  • Have all equipment (tape and scissors) located close to you.
